Embers and Sparks by Amy Allen

I really enjoyed this. It’s a clever use of mythology carried forward into the 21st century with all of the issues that 21st century life entails.
The relationship of a muse and their artist trying to connect is nicely portrayed – with tales of her past mistakes. Naturally the path of true love is also to be trodden, and requires acceptance, honesty, passion and a often avoided level of introspection and self examination.
Penny and Theo (twins) are estranged from their family and scraping by, trying to forge a path in life with art and music rather than corporate success and money. However, a certain level of finance is also needed to pay bills.
Anthea has both money and the ability to spark Penny’s creativity. As they meet and develop their professional relationship they both yearn for something more – are they both looking for something that the other can provide?
There’s a lot of shared moments, dealing with baggage and honesty which gets them to a place where they are both comfortable to be. Eventually. There are of course many things that go wrong, or are not quite right along the way. But they are mere hurdles to be faced in their journey together.

I found this book to be a delightful look at serious 21st century issues in a reflective manner.
