I really liked this book.
It has several unusual angles to it. There is a death, there are break ins and the police are involved. The witness (Naomi) has an unusual disability in that she has hyperacusis – her hearing is too good and she cannot tolerate many of the everyday sounds. The detective (Diana) called in due to her skill in dealing with witnesses requiring a level of specialist handling has no problem accommodating this which leads them to developing a bond as she seeks to protect the witness. Needless to say that bond develops over the course of the story.
It’s more than a book about a police investigation and it’s more than a romance; it’s watching 2 people thrown together by circumstance, but we watch them under a microscope as the story rarely extends beyond them. Both women are unsure of themself and whether they are reading the situation correctly – obviously at some point neither of them are or the book would be vey short!
Diana’s previous marriage was abusive and her adult children practically throw her at Diana and tell her to be happy, so no homophobia evident there!
And before you know it the book is finished – it keeps you that wrapped in the story.
