This is a really interesting book.
I like historical fiction so I was hoping this was going to be good – and it is.
There are 2 storylines running together.
The first is one that I am fairly familiar with – Radclyffe Hall and the story of her life surrounding the publication of The Well of Loneliness. This is obviously embellished with the addition of the minutiae of her daily life etc but makes good historical faction. It quite literally brings her character to life.
The second storyline follows Maggie – an Irish woman who has moved to London to become a firefighter at a dry cleaning firm. She falls on her feet finding accommodation with a lesbian couple and meets other women in the area and at work. We watch her finding herself, whilst she is closely following Radclyffe Hall’s work and experience surrounding the controversy around her book.
Very enjoyable read – plenty of authentic context for the story.
