I had this book in my TBR section for a while. And why I did not read it before now I cannot think.
It made me really laugh. And it actually had a proper story that the ‘romance’ was dancing around the edges of.
Best friends at school – off to uni etc separately. Realise later that they loved each other. I have read a number of books with this back story. None of them turned out like this though.
The back story is complex and hilarious. Callie is on the run from her crime lord grandmother – yes. That was not a typo. Callie was brought up by the crime lord grandmother after the death of her mother at a young age. Erstwhile best friend Daisy tries to find her. And does. By following a trail of women she has slept with across Europe!
They then have to collect the various parts of the crime lord grandmother’s little black book which Callie has left in sections across Europe. You would think it would be something you would do quietly – not attracting unwelcome attention to yourself would seem to be key.
So they hire a motorbike and side car and use helmets with dog ears on them – Wallace and Grommet style.
Some of the women that Callie has slept her way across Europe with also feature – as inevitably they have to retrace some of her steps to find the hidden pieces. I was particularly amused by the description of sex with Gabriella Bianchi – ‘once she was done riding me like a fucking mechanical bull’ and ‘Boobs should be comforting and sensual, not a set of weapons that can inflict deadly force’.
The dead mother makes an appearance at the end.
And the grandmother stabs Callie and tries to kill her!
All in all it amused me.
And the HEA in the epilogue had a non traditional spin on the traditional HEA. And I much prefer a non traditional epilogue.
