Root, Alyson – Broken Parts Included

I really enjoyed this.
This showcased the effects of endometriosis on all aspects of a sufferer’s life. And did it really well – making it part of the story. It also emphasised the effects that it can have on the whole life – physical and mental health, friendships, relationships, employment etc.
And it did it whilst using the word discombobulated – a word I am particularly fond of.
Lydia finds it getting n the way of all her relationships – if it wasn’t so all encompassing and debilitating I would say it was a useful way of clearing out the arseholes in her life.
And making room for the one person who seemed to always have her back and be interested in the whole/real her.
There is sibling rivalry, useless medics, lesbian film nights where none of the characters die, men sleeping with their secretaries, triplets, and a date with a nurse. Not to mention of course her sister’s best friend Halle. Who aspires to be more than her sister’s best friend which does not please her sister.
There are more histrionics from the sister later in the story – I might not think rationally about things if I had triplets!

There is of course an epilogue – which nicely encapsulated so much of what this story has been about. There’s pregnancy, hormonal mood issues, self esteem issues which were nicely sidestepped by a loving, accepting wife, and the ‘perfectly imperfect’ jar.

All in all, I’d say this book was practically perfect in every way.
I would recommend it to everyone. It made me smile.
