This is a book that I probably should not have read.
It features a car crash with a young couple dying leaving their baby son behind to be cared for by family.
He has 2 aunts – in amongst a large extended family – who each want to car for him. One is the sister of the mother – the other the sister of the father. They argue and fight over who is going to get custody.
Did I mention they were lesbian/bi and attracted to each other and sleep together several times (almost by accident).
They both annoy each other by getting legal representation that will stop at nothing to secure guardianship and custody for themselves.
It also showcases the difficulties with aging parents and chronic ill health issues.
Predictably enough the epilogue shows them having joint custody and getting married.
Again, these stories are meant to have predictable endings – it is how they get there that is the story.
Why shouldn’t I have been reading this story? The beautifully written ongoing anguish of losing a sibling hit home a but too hard in places. But I still read and enjoyed the book.
