This is a story which revolves around professional women’s basketball. I knew nothing about basketball at all. I have never seen a game. I barely remember netball!
Lex is hoping to finish her college basketball career on a high but is pushed by Eva ( her college basketball opponent) and shatters her wrist. This could be career ending.
Lex then sits out the draft as it upsets her as she had hoped to be drafted (I can only hope I am using such technical terms correctly!) To her surprise she is drafted in the 3rd round and by the same team that have taken her archenemy Eva. To add even more salt to her wound they are housed in the same apartment and have to live together.
They have to find a way to get on – and indeed they find a way to do more than just get on.
Lex recovers from her injury but is still careful about her wrist. When they have sex she is mindful of it and needs to be resourceful in order not to damage it as it is not quite recovered.
This is an important point not covered by most of the books I have read recently – and I have read quite a lot lately. The normalisation of not having perfect sex the first time with a new partner – it shows the awkwardness of having to make physical accommodations for injury and disability and the accommodation of difference. It is much more than a book about basketball.
So I know more now about basketball and the league and how it works than I knew there was to know. And I also know I still know very little.
