Jackson, Kat – The Road Left Behind Us

I listened to this book which is unusual for me. My mum was in the critical care unit at a hospital which is a 2 hour round trip. I needed something to distract me and relax my mind.
It did not disappoint.
This is an academic age gap romance set in the English Lit department of an American university. The 2 main characters are Callie, a 30 something GTA and Kate, a, I think late 40s/50 Professor.
I’ve been a GTA so I recognised some of the issues that cropped up. I was not in a relationship with a professor. I was thinking more office politics and endless marking.
The story is woven around Callie and her relationship with Kate, who turned hot and cold constantly, Prof Rene who always had interesting comments to make when drinking wine, Prof Courtney and her husband who were friends of Callie’s and offered advice, Audrey the admin who had a horror of workplace relationships, and the 2 other GTA’s she shared an office with.
And there’s a bookshop. And of course a sub plot of Callie editing sapphic fiction for a magazine which Kate had submitted work to under a pen name. Callie realised it was her and the work was describing her.

There’s humour too – I laughed.

Beautifully written and the narration was smooth.
It kept me interested and engaged, for approaching 9 hours – so a fair few trips.
