This another book that I listened to. That seems to make a difference. For one thing, it takes so much longer to listen to someone read it to you than it does to read it yourself! But for another week this book kept me company on daily trips to the hospital.
This story is centred around a friendship group from college. It begins in a church and ends 12 years or so later in a church. There is a lot that happens in between.
I am a firm believer in the possibility of figuring out the direction of the story in the first 5 minutes. As in, you can see where you think it will end. What I don’t know is how the author will take you there and what you will see on the way.
Now this story does not disappoint with that. There are some wonderful characters that you meet on the way. Some dip in and out while others are the thread the story is woven with.
As you may infer from the title weddings are a backdrop to the content. What would make Aubrey McFadden make a statement that she is not getting married? It could be so many things.
A classic slow burn romance simmers its way through the pages of this book. Romance that is quite fascinating to watch (listen to) as it progresses. Inevitably, there are times when it is 2 steps forward and 1 back. And then a little sideways shuffle.
It also nicely showcases the acceptance that children have of gender, sexuality and relationships when they are exposed to love, acceptance and understanding from a young age.
Epilogue –
This is a fitting ending to this story. I seem to have a bit of a fixation with epilogues. This one made me smile.
This book made me smile and laugh. It’s a light-hearted look at ongoing relationships within a group of college friends as they enter the world of work and adulthood. I might listen to it again next week. Those hospital trips just aren’t the same without her.
