This is the 3rd book in the South Downs Romance Series. I would recommend reading all 3 for the full effect, but they also can all be read as a standalone.
This is quite literally an age gap sapphic ‘To the Manor Born’.
After 35 years of being Lady of the Manor Gillian finds herself widowed (which she is quite ok with) but she had not been aware that there was no money and she needed to sell up and move into the lodge at the end of the drive. She is grieving – for her estate and her position in the community.
The estate is bought by Viola – an international classical singing star – who bought the estate for her mother who has since died. She is also grieving.
Of course they do not get on until they do. Gillian helps Viola understand her role as lady of the manor and they become friends and fall in love. Gillian is very concerned with the opinions of the villagers.
There are some comings and goings (quite a few of them are in a helicopter) but eventually work things out. Gillian finds herself with millions to buy the estate back and Viola heads off on an international tour.
There is of course an epilogue.
This is set 4 months after the end of the story. Gillian hosts a party which serves as a coming out party too. The villagers that she was so worried about are quite accepting of them together.
This shows country life and how small communities can surprise with regards to their attitudes. It may have been the case that when Gillian became lady of the manor a lesbian would have been shocking to the locals – now they all know her and 35 years on opinions and times have changed. Life still does revolve around the estate – but it is the use of the facilities more than having an old married couple to open the fete etc. It is important to be able to grieve the things in live that are lost – whether that be a relationship, parent, or role in the community. And then be open to new things and moving on.
