This is Book 2 involving Detective Xavier Wellington (who never shows his face in public so as not to alert criminals as to what he looks like) and his exceedingly capable assistant Miss Stetson Goody (who is never seen in the same room as Xavier Wellington).
Only really it’s about Stetson and her girlfriend, Evelyn the piano player.
This sees Stetson accompany Evelyn and her company on a 3 month tour of the states. Wellington does not go with them, but still Stetson is able to find mysteries and murders to solve on the way.
It’s an interesting read – all of the research into Victorian England and USA is paraded for the reader to marvel at. There is humour as well as masterly disguises, dastardly villains, toffs and sleazy slimeballs.
And a cardboard box.
Stetson also spends time on a ranch connecting with family she never thought she would have the chance to find.
This series in delightful – a literary sorbet for my brain.
