Downer, C. Jean – Lies Are Forever

I got an ARC of Book 2 in this series. I read the first page and thought I would better understand who everyone one was if I read the first book. So I bought it. And of course I read it.
It would be fair to say that it took me by surprise. I thought I was reading a traditional detective series – I quite enjoy those.
When magic and witches (yes, I know wicce) happened I was both surprised and alarmed. I should really read the blurb about books but sometimes I just dive straight in. I don’t read books like that.
But I enjoyed it so much I read it until I finished – several hours after my mid week lights out should have happened.
It has all sorts of creatures in it, an alternative world accessed by through a crypt, and different types of ‘Magicals’ living in our world ‘undercover’ so as not to alarm the ‘Nogicals’ (that’s you and me – unless you are a ‘magical’).

The creativity required to not only imagine another world and all of the different types of beings, but to convey it in words with a coherent timeline and story. Amazing.
I especially love that when learning magic, everything is sounded out phonetically by the characters so that I can know how to pronounce them.
There is of course a love story running through the story. And a detective story.
I need more of this type of book in my life!
