Jae – a Falling Star

I really enjoyed this book. It could be considered to be a festive holiday read as it starts at Christmas – and the title is derived from a star falling from the top of a Christmas tree. But it is not an overly festive book so would be suitable for all year round reading for those not wanting to prolong the festive season.
Austen starts work as the assistant to Mr Saunders – however there is also a Ms Saunders in the company with a very bad reputation for being an ogre.
It is the Ms Saunders who is hit on the head by the falling star. Austen doesn’t know who she is and befriends her – casually mentioning the gossip she has heard about Ms Saunders – who does not identify herself.
They develop a friendship without her identity being mentioned – and is now too frightened to tell her as she will lose her. This inevitably happens.
There is lots of miscommunication when Austen is also able to see that much of her image is just gossip and incorrect.

I really enjoyed this book – the vulnerability of the ogre ice queen, the earnestness of the assistant, and the real friendship and relationship that developed when they considered themselves to be just people rather than company positions.

There is of course an epilogue.
When asked how they meet they could legitimately respond with ‘Under a falling star’.
